Tax laws for couple in 2 states
Sunday, February 4th, 2007Q: My husband and I own a house in Florida where I live and work. He has a job in another state where he lives. We may sell the Florida house in several years. The house is in both our names. Do we both have to live in the house the specified time to claim that $500,000 tax exemption?
Jeannie A.
Naples, Fla.
A: Yes. But you both don’t have to live in the house as your principal residence at the same time, if that is a problem.
