Ever since the real estate market boiled over, melting down the mortgage industry and its cheap-money feeding frenzy, I’ve been waiting for one happy outcome: an end to the roar of mortgage brokers at my various doors.

But no. Via e-mail, fax, phone and daily mail, mortgage solicitations have continued to pour into my life. Next thing you know they’ll be hiring skywriters, smoke signalers, carrier pigeons or staging musical revues:

SHANGHAI — Early one recent Friday morning, government agents dressed in military fatigues and lugging sledgehammers stormed into one apartment after another at a huge housing complex here. They smashed walls and tossed tenants’ belongings outside. Frightened occupants fled.

These weren’t drug houses or prostitution dens. The targets of raids were “collective rentals”: apartments divided into tiny rooms and crammed with 10 or more tenants, many of them migrant workers.

“All of a sudden, we’ve become pests of society,” said one resident driven onto the streets.

A bill that would give homeowners facing foreclosure a tax break if their lender forgives part of their debt — and make up for the lost revenue by raising taxes on sales of some second homes — passed the House of Representatives Thursday.

HR 3648, the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007, would also extend the deduction for private mortgage insurance to 2014, helping home buyers avoid high-interest piggyback loans.
